Painting vs. Coating – What’s Best for Your Project?

To put it simply, paint is for aesthetics, and coating is for protection.
While paint has some protective properties, it is not built to last for years to come without degrading on some level. There are different types of paint created for different surfaces, conditions, and application type, and choosing the right product can help to increase the protective properties and longevity of the paint.
Coating is multi-functional on a higher level. Like paint, it can be used for aesthetics- to create an appealing appearance. However, its primary function is to keep surfaces from degrading based on outside factors such as weather and damage to the surface or structure. Coating can withstand a higher level of damage than paint can.
For example- You can have paint that is water-resistant and based on the type of paint, can be washed well to keep its appearance looking clean. However, you can use a coating that is water-proof, self-cleaning, and prevents rust and corrosion- so there is a much lower level of maintenance, and will last much longer.
For interior projects, paint is recommended as it is cost effective and not subject to damage based on weather and other outside factors. But for exterior projects, coating may be your best option.
